Andrew Garfield stars as OpenAI founder Sam Altman in the first trailer for Luca Guadagnino’s Artificial, exploring the intense five-day saga surrounding his 2023 firing and reinstatement.

The official trailer has been released for Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film ‘Artificial’, which stars Andrew Garfield in the lead role as OpenAI founder Sam Altman. The narrative focuses on the intense drama surrounding Altman's sudden firing in 2023 and his dramatic reinstatement just five days later.

Set against the backdrop of a high-stakes AI arms race, the ensemble cast features Ike Barinholtz as co-founder Elon Musk, Monica Barbaro as former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, Anora breakout Yura Borisov as former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, and Mark Rylance as Nobel Prize winner Geoffrey Hinton. The film also features Jason Schwartzman, Zosia Mamet, Cooper Hoffman, Chris O'Dowd, Cooper Koch, and Billie Lourd.

According to Variety, Amazon MGM originally planned to release Artificial worldwide but notably dropped the project earlier this year, a move that coincided with Amazon signing a major partnership with OpenAI and investing $50 billion into the company. Explaining the decision, Amazon MGM Studios stated the film would "be better served if it were released by a different studio.".

Despite the corporate friction and its rocky path to distribution, the film's exceptionally timely subject matter positions Artificial to potentially muscle its way into the Oscar conversation. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release this Christmas.
