Andhra Pradesh, Telangana weather today (August 24): IMD warns heavy rain, thunderstorms likely in Hyderabad, Amaravati and other cities.

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana could see heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds on Monday as a low-pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas.

The weather system has raised the possibility of heavy showers in parts of North Andhra, while several districts in Telangana, including Hyderabad, could also receive rain and thunderstorms. Authorities have asked people in vulnerable and coastal areas to remain alert.

Heavy rain likely in North Andhra

The low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas is likely to bring heavy rainfall at one or two places in North Andhra on Monday and Tuesday, Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority managing director Prakhar Jain said.

Parts of Polavaram, Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli and Kakinada districts could receive light to moderate rain with lightning on Monday. Other parts of the state may also see light rain.

Gusty winds of 40-60 kmph are likely along the Andhra Pradesh coast, with rough seas and high waves also expected.

Jain advised fishermen not to venture into the sea until Tuesday and asked people to avoid standing under trees or near large hoardings during thunderstorms and strong winds.

Telangana also likely to see heavy showers

Telangana could also see heavy rain and thunderstorms as the weather system affects the region.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rain at isolated places in Kumuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Karimnagar, Peddapalli and Jayashankar Bhupalpally on Monday.

Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Vikarabad, Sangareddy and Medak are among the districts that could see thunderstorms accompanied by winds of around 30-40 kmph.

The weather department expects light to moderate rain or thundershowers at many places, although rainfall could become more scattered in the following days.

What is causing the rain?

The low-pressure area formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and surrounding region at around 8.30 am on Sunday. Its associated cyclonic circulation extends up to about 7.6 km above sea level.

The system is helping draw moisture into parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, increasing the possibility of rain, thunderstorms and strong winds across the two states.

Hyderabad had already recorded 26 mm of rain by Sunday, with the city recording a maximum temperature of 32.7°C and a minimum of 23°C.

Authorities ask residents to remain alert

Andhra Pradesh Home and Disaster Management Minister V Anitha directed district administrations to closely monitor the situation, particularly in coastal and low-lying areas.

She also asked police, revenue, fisheries and disaster management officials to coordinate and keep emergency response teams ready.

In Telangana, residents in districts under heavy-rain and thunderstorm warnings have also been advised to remain cautious as weather conditions remain unsettled.

The combination of heavy rain, lightning, gusty winds and rough seas could cause localised disruption, particularly in coastal and low-lying areas.
