Anand Mahindra reminds India of Janaki Ammal
India’s achievements in agriculture and science are often celebrated, yet the pioneers behind these successes are frequently overlooked. One such trailblazer is Dr Janaki Ammal, the pioneering botanist whose work transformed India’s sugarcane industry.

Despite her crucial contributions, her name is rarely mentioned in schools, leaving her story largely unknown to the younger generation.

On Monday, business leader Anand Mahindra highlighted her legacy in an X post, calling her a shining example of courage, ambition, and service.

“India is the world’s second-largest sugarcane producer. Yet the woman who made it possible slipped into the footnotes of our history. Her story is one of extraordinary courage, ambition and service. She is an exceptional role model for young Indian women. How many children today would be able to name her in a general knowledge quiz? Unsung heroes, especially women scientists, should not remain unsung. Dr Janaki Ammal is my #MondayMotivation,” Mahindra wrote.

The Scientist Who Changed India’s Sugarcane Landscape

Born at a time when societal expectations limited women to marriage, Janaki Ammal chose a different path. In 1931, she became the first Indian woman to earn a Doctor of Philosophy in Botany.

She opted not to marry, dedicating herself fully to scientific research. Returning to India, she joined the Sugarcane Breeding Institute in Coimbatore as a geneticist.

At that time, Indian sugarcane had lower sugar content and relied heavily on imported varieties from Papua New Guinea.

Ammal’s work in hybrid cross-breeding produced high-yield, sweeter sugarcane suited to Indian soil.

This innovation transformed India from a sugarcane importer into one of the world’s leading producers, bringing substantial economic benefits to the nation.

Remembering an Unsung Hero

Although Dr Janaki Ammal’s work revolutionised India’s sugarcane industry and earned her a place among the world’s respected scientists, her story remains largely absent from textbooks.

Mahindra’s tribute serves as a reminder of the many unsung heroes, particularly women scientists, whose efforts have shaped India’s growth.

Her life is an enduring example of perseverance, courage, and dedication, a legacy that continues to inspire young Indian women today.
