Anand Mahindra’s Viral Post Brings Spotlight to Gujarat’s Maniyaro Raas
A heartwarming video shared by Anand Mahindra has introduced many social media users to the vibrant Gujarati folk dance known as Maniyaro Raas. The clip, which shows a grandfather teaching dance steps to his young grandson, quickly won hearts online for both its cultural beauty and emotional depth.

Sharing the video as part of his Monday motivation post on X, Anand Mahindra admitted he was instantly drawn to the clip even though he did not initially know the name of the dance form.

“I’m not sure why I paused on this clip when it appeared on my timeline,” he wrote.

“I don’t even know the name of the dance form (apparently it’s from Saurashtra) but it shows a grandfather teaching his grandson the steps.”

The business tycoon went on to explain that while the dance itself was energetic and joyful, what truly stayed with him was the idea of traditions being passed down from one generation to another.

“But what really drew me in was what this clip symbolised: the passing on of tradition, rhythm and memory from one generation to the next,” he added.

“In today’s uncertain world, I found that strangely comforting. That not everything around you will change. It was a reassurance of continuity.”

What Is Maniyaro Raas?

The dance featured in the viral clip is believed to be Maniyaro Raas, a traditional folk dance performed by the Maher or Mer community of the Saurashtra region in Gujarat.

Maniyaro Raas is known for its high-energy formations, synchronised footwork and rhythmic movements performed with dandiyas, or wooden sticks. Unlike the more commercialised forms of Garba and Dandiya commonly seen during Navratri celebrations, Maniyaro Raas has a strong martial character that reflects the bravery, discipline and warrior heritage of the Mer community of Saurashtra.

The dance is deeply rooted in community traditions and is often performed during festivals, celebrations and cultural gatherings across Saurashtra. Performers move in perfect rhythm while maintaining stamina and synchronisation, making it both visually striking and physically demanding.

Internet Falls in Love With the Grandfather-Grandson Moment

The emotional connection between the grandfather and grandson became one of the biggest talking points online. Social media users praised the clip not only for showcasing Gujarati culture but also for capturing a rare and beautiful family moment.

One user commented that the dance appeared to be a traditional form of Garba or Dandiya unique to Saurashtra and highlighted how much energy and coordination the performance requires.

Others focused more on the emotional side of the video. A user wrote that some traditions are not preserved in books but survive through music, dance and moments shared within families.

Another comment described the clip as “life coming full circle”, with both generations expressing joy together through rhythm and movement.

Why the Video Resonated With So Many People

Part of the reason the video struck such a strong emotional chord online is because it reflects something timeless, the passing down of culture through lived experiences rather than formal teaching.

Traditional Indian folk dances have increasingly found audiences far beyond their regions thanks to viral social media videos. From Garba and Ghoomar to Bhangra and Lavani, local art forms are now reaching younger audiences globally.
