Foreigner compares his healthcare experiences in India and US
The man began by recalling a medical emergency he experienced in India a few years ago. He said he had fainted several times and was taken to a hospital, where he received a private room without having to deal with extensive paperwork. According to him, doctors conducted several tests, including electrocardiograms (ECGs), magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs), computed tomography (CT) scans and blood tests. He also claimed that he could speak to his doctor whenever he wanted. After spending a few days in the hospital, he received a diagnosis and a treatment plan. The total cost of his treatment was around $500, he said.
His experience in the US, however, was markedly different.
‘I had to drive myself to the hospital’
Recalling his medical emergency in America, the man said he experienced severe chest pain while playing basketball. He claimed he did not call an ambulance because of the high cost of emergency medical transportation in the US. Instead, he drove himself to the hospital despite being in considerable pain. The man said he had to wait for more than 90 minutes in the waiting room while hospital staff processed his paperwork. When he was eventually examined, doctors told him he had suffered a mini heart attack, according to his account. He said medical staff moved him to a room and began conducting tests. However, he alleged that getting access to his doctor was difficult.
“Whenever I asked to see the doctor, they just told me he's too busy and will come at a later time,” he said.
He also described an uncomfortable experience during a blood test, claiming that a nurse repeatedly struggled to find a vein and then told him to be quiet when he screamed in pain.
$23,000 hospital bill in US
The financial burden of the treatment was another major point in the man's account. After spending several days at the hospital, he said doctors were unable to determine what had happened. He also claimed he was discharged without a clear follow-up plan. The hospital bill came to $23,000, he said. Even though he had health insurance, the man claimed he was left with an out-of-pocket expense of $7,000. He added that he was already paying thousands of dollars for his insurance coverage. The experience left him questioning the cost of receiving medical treatment in the US. “America literally punishes you for being sick,” he said in the video. He argued that the financial pressure associated with medical emergencies had become a major factor in his decision to return to India.
Why the foreigner wants to return to India
The man acknowledged that America had several advantages, including good weather and infrastructure. However, he said those benefits were not enough to convince him to settle there permanently. For him, access to affordable healthcare was more important. However, the experiences described in the video are personal and do not necessarily reflect the healthcare systems or treatment costs faced by everyone in either country. The video does not provide details about the man's insurance policy, the specific hospitals involved or the medical procedures that contributed to his final bill. These factors can significantly affect healthcare expenses.
