The Sanskrit terms ama, which translate to "darkness," and vasa, which means "dwelling," are the origin of the word Amavasya. The moon will not be fully visible at night. On the lunar calendar, Amavasya occurs every month. Due to the importance of the Amavasya to Hindus, it is regarded as one of the most fortunate days in the Hindu calendar. Making an offering (tarpanam) to their deceased ancestors this evening is a popular custom for Hindus. Usually, Hindu tradition holds that during Amavasya, the bad forces and negative energies are strong and at their most liberated, having a negative effect on our subconscious mind.

Amavasya day is regarded as favorable for ancestor worship every month. To obtain blessings from their ancestors, Hindus present shraddha to them. Offering sacrifices to deceased ancestors is highly respected during the Pitru Paksha (Mahalaya), a dark fortnight between September and October.

On Amavasya, people worship Lord Shiva because he has authority over all evil spirits and supernatural beings. For protection from these energies as well as to ensure that the evil spirits active on this day do not hurt us, people worship Lord Shiva.
