The annual Amarnath Yatra, a challenging spiritual trek to the ice Shivling in Jammu and Kashmir, will take place from July 3 to August 9, 2025. Pilgrims aged 13-70 can register online or offline, adhering to health guidelines and daily limits.

Every year, thousands of devotees from across India travel to the holy Amarnath Cave in Jammu and Kashmir. The cave, at over 12,700 feet above sea level, holds a naturally formed ice Shivling believed to be a symbol of Lord Shiva. The Amarnath Yatra is not just a trek, it’s a spiritual journey that tests your faith, health, and patience.

This year, the Yatra will be held from 3 July to 9 August 2025, as confirmed by the Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board (SASB). Here’s everything you need to know if you’re planning to go.

Dates, Who Can Go, and Pilgrim Limits

  • Dates: 3 July to 9 August 2025
  • Daily Limit: About 15,000 pilgrims allowed per day
  • Age Limit: 13 to 70 years
  • Health Rules: Not allowed for those with heart, lung or other serious health issues

How to Register for Amarnath Yatra 2025

Online:
  • Visit jksasb.nic.in
  • Go to ‘Yatra Permit Registration’
  • Fill in your details and upload your photo and Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC)
  • Pay Rs 220 and download your permit
Offline:
  • Collect a token slip 3 days before your Yatra date from set locations in Jammu
  • Get your medical check-up the next day
  • Complete Aadhaar and biometric checks to get your RFID card

  • Yatra Permit (Baltal or Pahalgam route)
  • RFID card
  • Aadhaar or passport (for NRIs)
  • Six passport-size photos
  • Valid mobile number
  • Travel proof matching Yatra dates


Where to Stay and Eat

Shelter:
  • Weather-safe tents and huts are available at camps on both routes
  • These can be booked on the spot
  • Using these is advised for safety and rest
Food:
  • Government depots sell ration items at fixed rates
  • Tea stalls and small food joints are along the route
  • Carry snacks like biscuits, dry fruits and energy bars
  • Firewood and cooking gas are available at key camps

Route Options: Baltal vs Pahalgam

Pahalgam Route:
  • 36 km long, takes 3–5 days
  • Ideal for a slower, more scenic journey
Baltal Route:
  • 14 km, steep and tiring, but faster (1–2 days)
  • Best for those short on time and physically fit
Helicopter Services:
  • From Srinagar to Neelgrath (Baltal route)
  • From Pahalgam to Panchtarni
  • Good for senior citizens and those who can’t walk long distances

Safety and Trekking Tips

  • Walk daily: Start walking 4–5 km every day at least a month before
  • Try yoga and breathing: Light pranayam helps with oxygen use
  • Arrive early: Reach base camp a day or two before for better adjustment
  • Stay hydrated: Drink 5 litres of water every day
  • Eat right: Stick to carbs like rice and rotis, avoid fried food
  • Dress in layers: Weather can change suddenly
  • Watch for altitude sickness: Get help if you feel dizzy or tired
  • Use medical posts: Located every 2 km along the trail
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking: They can make dehydration worse
  • Stay alert: If you or someone else feels sick, don’t ignore it
  • Carry your permits: Keep your ID and permits handy
  • Respect the mountains: Go at your own pace, and stay mindful, it’s not a race
