During a discussion on the court’s schedule, the Chief Justice initially proposed listing the case after the Holi break
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant made a candid and light-hearted remark during a Supreme Court hearing while scheduling the next date in the case of Suresh Devi vs High Court of Judicature at Allahabad. While scheduling a matter from the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad, Chief Justice Kant suggested that the case be listed after the Holi break, and then extended it by an additional week.

The matter came up before the Supreme Court for fixing a date for further hearing. During a discussion on the court’s schedule, the Chief Justice initially proposed listing the case after the Holi break but later remarked, in a lighter tone, that it could instead be taken up the following week.

'Ek hafte bhang ka nasha..'

“List it after Holi break. No no… list after that week also… Allahabad hai bhai… ek hafta toh lag jayega bhang ka nasha utarne mein (It’s Allahabad, brother… it will take at least a week for the effect of bhang to wear off)”, he remarked in court in Hindi, drawing smiles from those present, reported Bar and Bench.

The comment has sparked discussions in legal circles and on social media. The comment was widely viewed as an informal aside, alluding to the traditional consumption of bhang — a cannabis-based drink — during Holi celebrations in parts of Uttar Pradesh, including Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad). Holi is celebrated with great enthusiasm across North India, and the remark was largely interpreted as a cultural reference made in jest.

Although the observation was not part of the formal proceedings, it has since sparked discussion online. The case remains pending, with the next hearing set to be scheduled by the Supreme Court after the Holi recess.
