All you need to know about Chhath Mahaparv Puja 2022: 36-hour fast and Sandhya Arghya Puja Vidhi

To honour the Sun God, people celebrate the Chhath Puja festival or Mahaparv. During Chhath Puja, devotees offer prayers to the Lord Surya, who is revered both as the creator of the universe and the initiator of life on Earth.

This festival, also known as Chhath Mahaparv, is one of the most popular occasions in Bihar, Jharkhand, and the eastern districts of Uttar Pradesh. Lord Surya is worshipped during four days of festivities, which include Arghya offering and Chhati Maiya aarti.

Nahay Khay marked the start of the festival on the 28th of October, and Kharna (Panchami), Lohanda, and Sandhya Arghya will mark its conclusion on the 31st of October.


It is believed that deities grant all of their devotees' wishes on Chhath and bestow upon them blessings in the form of health and prosperity.

What are the rituals of Sandhya Arghya?

- Bamboo baskets holding the prasad are brought to the ghat where the devotees present Sandhya arghya to Chhathi Maiyya and the Sun God.

-On this day, devotees refrain from eating and drinking. The nirjala fast does not end when Usha arghya is served to Surya Bhagwan and Chhathi Maiyya in the morning on the fourth or final day of Chhath.

- On the last day of Chhath, vratis, or those who indulge in fasting, consume the prasad in the bamboo baskets before sharing it with the rest of the family.
