Alka Yagnik recalls how she was disappointed with the opening lines of song ‘Ek Do Teen’
In a recent interview, Alka Yagnik recounted how disappointed she was at first when she heard the song ‘Ek Do Teen’ beginning words but later realised what a masterpiece it was. The song was picturized on Madhuri Dixit.

In an interview, she described being displeased with her recording of the song, and how Laxmikant refused to dub over the tape after several requests. She claimed that even now, everytime she hears the music, she can not help but notice mistakes and wonder whether she might have done some parts better.
Alka said “Laxmikant ji told her to write down the song”, to which she said “I thought, are they messing with me? But I did not say anything, I was scared of them, I would keep quiet when they were around.”
She continued, “So, I wrote it. But uske baad jab second line likhi, antre likhe, I was like, ‘My God, what a song, what lyrics’. And the way the song progressed, and how it climaxed. I had great fun singing it.”
She explained that because Laxmikant-Pyarelal wanted a complete 60-person chorus, there was no place at Mehboob studio, so she had to record the music against a wall. She said she had a high fever while recording the Filmfare-winning song. “Ek Do Teen” was a major success and garnered a fantastic reception.
Alka Yagnik began her career as a playback vocalist in the early 1980s. She stated that she has not been working as much recently since she is not interested in the songs that are being written for films these days. She remarked that current cinema music lacks soul and that she no longer feels the need to labour as hard as she did in her prime.
