Difference between Agni Prime and Agni 5
India successfully tested the Agni-Prime missile on Thursday using a rail-based mobile launcher, marking a first in the country’s strategic missile programme. Defence minister Rajnath Singh called it a “first-of-its-kind launch” that highlights India’s growing missile capabilities and strategic deterrence.

The launch has invited comparisons with the Agni-5, India’s long-range missile. Both belong to the Agni family, but they serve different purposes and bring unique advantages to the nation’s defence.

Agni Prime vs Agni-5: What makes Agni-Prime special?

Agni-Prime is India’s next-generation intermediate-range ballistic missile capable of striking targets up to 2,000 km away. Its key feature is mobility: it can be launched from road and rail-based mobile platforms.

The recent test used a rail-based launcher integrated with India’s national railway network, allowing the missile to move across the country quickly, remain hidden, and launch with minimal preparation. This flexibility makes Agni-Prime especially valuable for rapid-response and regional deterrence.

Agni-5 Missile

Agni-5 is India’s longest-range missile, with a reach exceeding 5,000 km. It is a three-stage, solid-fuel missile that is canister-launched for fast deployment.

A major advantage of Agni-5 is its MIRV (multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicle) capability, demonstrated under the 2024 ‘Mission Divyastra’ trial. This allows the missile to carry three to four nuclear warheads, each aimed at a different target, giving India a powerful long-range deterrent.

Why are both missiles important?

Agni-Prime and Agni-5 complement each other to form a layered deterrence strategy. Agni-Prime ensures quick, mobile, regional coverage, while Agni-5 strengthens India’s long-range strategic capability.

The rail-based mobility of Agni-Prime makes it a special addition, giving India the ability to deploy missiles rapidly and unpredictably, a significant step forward in the country’s strategic defence technology.

The test follows the successful launch of the missile in August at Chandipur, Odisha.

In March 2024, a trial of Agni-5 was conducted under ‘Mission Divyastra’, showcasing MIRV (multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicle) capability.

A MIRV-equipped missile can carry 3–4 nuclear warheads, each aimed at different targets. Currently, the SFC, formed in 2003, operates only single-warhead missiles. The solid-fuelled, three-stage Agni-5 is canister-launched, allowing rapid deployment.
