A 42-year-old resident of Mahim, Mumbai, alleged he received a set of tea cups instead of the Rs 55,000 smartphone he ordered from Amazon. The customer, Amar Chavan, filed a police complaint against Amazon, accusing the online retailer of cheating and claiming that the company has been unresponsive to his complaints.

Amar Chavan, who works as a deputy engineer at Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST), ordered a Tecno Phantom V Fold 5G smartphone worth Rs 54,999 from Amazon. The delivery was made on July 15, but instead of the smartphone, Chavan found a set of tea cups inside the package.

"I called up the shopping portal and complained... They assured they would probe and revert but did not revert till July 20. When I called them up, they expressed helplessness and refused to give me their investigation report after which I approached the police," said Chavan.

Chavan further alleges that Amazon is not taking interest in investigating the case. He mentioned that he has provided the police with CCTV footage of the delivery person.

This incident echoes a similar situation last month in Bengaluru. A woman named Tanvi found a snake inside her Amazon package after ordering a Microsoft Xbox controller.

She also shared a video on X, writing: "Ordered an Xbox controller from @amazonIN and received a free snake with it!" The woman and her husband claimed that Amazon's customer support put them on hold for over two hours, forcing them to handle the situation themselves "in the middle of the night."
