As soon as weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won gold for India at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, celebrations began at her native place Nongpok Kakching in Manipur.

Among those in the village leading the celebrations was her mother Tombi Devi, and some of her relatives. Chanu posted to Twitter a video in which her mother and some other women were seen waving the tricolour and performing a traditional dance.

Her mother said she had tears in her eyes when she saw her daughter win the gold. Chanu won a gold medal with a combined lift of 201kg in the Women's 49kg final.

"I feel so happy. She won a gold medal at CWG 2022. I had cried in my heart after her victory. Everyone is rejoicing over her victory including her sisters, friends and family members." ANI quoted Tombi Devi as saying

A happy Chanu captioned the video: "My mom and other relatives celebrating victory at my home."
