Abhishek Sharma's mentor Yuvraj Singh shares why he doesn't want his son to become a cricketer

Cricketer Yuvraj Singh has often spoken openly about his complex and challenging relationship with his father, Yograj Singh. Since marrying model and actor Hazel Keech in 2016, the couple has welcomed two children: a son, Orion, and a daughter, Aura. In past interviews, Yuvraj has shared his desire to be a different kind of father than his own, emphasizing that he doesn’t necessarily want Orion to follow in his footsteps as a cricketer.

During an appearance on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast, the World Cup winner reflected on his father’s reaction after Yuvraj’s tournament victory. He said, “I think he was okay after 2011. He used to compare himself to Kapil Dev and say that, ‘When Kapil had the 1983 trophy in his hand, I had you (Yuvraj) in my hand.’ That almost felt like an insult. But I think he was okay once I had a World Cup of my own. I just hope that he doesn’t get after Orion. He keeps saying that I should put him in cricket, but I tell him, ‘Isko apni life jeene do (Let him live his life.)’ It’s because he was always a coach to me, and never a father. I don’t want that to happen with my son, I want to be father to him.”

In another interview with Curly Tales, Yuvraj shared insights about his father’s approach to parenting. He said, “He was harsh at times, but it was also his dream that I live his dream, which I understood. There were times when I didn’t like it, but I think sometimes you have to do things which you don’t like to understand what you want to achieve. I was pushed a lot, but that is why I started playing for India when I was just 18.” He added that he aims to break the cycle by doing activities with Orion that he never got to experience with his own father.


Yuvraj’s wife, Hazel, has also praised him for being a devoted father. She told Bombay Times, “He’s like this big mountain of support. They feel so safe and secure in his arms, which makes me fall in love with him all over again. I’m proud of the father he’s become and the man he’s growing into.” She also shared that their daughter cries whenever Yuvraj leaves the room, highlighting the deep bond he shares with their children.
