How CERNQ52 was detected and tracked
The Mount Lemmon Observatory in Arizona, operating as part of the Catalina Sky Survey, first detected CERNQ52 late on September 6. Initial estimates placed its size at around 0.8 metres, while a European Space Agency (ESA) centre calculated a somewhat broader range of between 0.6 and 1.2 metres across.As additional observations came in, tracking teams refined the object's trajectory. ESA's planetary defence experts ultimately determined it would enter the atmosphere over the Indian Ocean near northwest Australia at approximately 16:12 UTC, a location far removed from any populated areas or city lights.
Was the asteroid dangerous?
According to Richard Moissl, ESA's head of planetary defence, the object posed no real danger and was expected to produce nothing more than a brief, bright meteor before disintegrating.Although the asteroid did technically enter Earth's atmosphere, this bore no resemblance to a large-scale, catastrophic event.
