A ₹65,000 gamble that saved a family: How one cricket bat changed the fortune after heavy Covid losses

In 2020, a young boy made an unusual request, a premium English willow cricket bat. At the time, the Covid-19 lockdown had brought his family’s civil construction business in Chambal to a halt, making it a difficult financial period. Despite the strain, his father chose to take a loan and purchased the bat for ₹65,000, a decision that felt like a risky gamble back then.

That bat, part of the “KL Rahul” series, has since turned symbolic, not in monetary repayment, but through the boy’s performances, determination, and rise in cricket.

Yashbardhan Singh Chauhan steadily emerged as a promising young cricketer. Now approaching 18, he is the youngest in his family and is set to turn 18 in November.

His recent selection as India Under-19 captain marks a major milestone. He will lead the side in the upcoming series against Sri Lanka, reflecting his growing reputation in youth cricket.

A Father’s Risk During Uncertain Times

The bat purchase happened in early 2020 when financial uncertainty was at its peak for the family. With business contracts cancelled and income disrupted, the decision was not easy.

His father, Anami Singh Chauhan, later described the purchase as a leap of faith in his son’s future. At present, he has shifted to working in the flour mill business in Gwalior.

Runs That Repaid the Sacrifice

The investment soon began to show results on the field. Using that very bat, Yashbardhan scored around 1,300 runs in the Under-13 Kanmadikar Trophy in 2021. His performances drew attention from coaches and selectors alike.

Each boundary he scored was seen by the family as a quiet return on the sacrifice made during financially difficult times.

A Bat Treated as a Symbol, Not Just Equipment

The bat gradually became more than just sporting gear, it turned into a personal symbol of struggle, belief, and hope. Yashbardhan carried it everywhere, from practice sessions to competitive matches, treating it almost like a companion in his journey.

While teammates sometimes borrowed his other gear, he never allowed anyone to use this particular bat.

Even when a senior Ranji player once requested to try it, he refused. He later explained his sentiment, saying: "This bat carries my deepest emotions. I can never share this willow with anyone"

His family emphasized that this was not arrogance, but respect for what the bat represented, his father’s trust during a difficult phase.

Leadership Recognition at the U-19 Level

His consistent batting performances, calm temperament under pressure, and respected presence in the dressing room ultimately led the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to appoint him as India U-19 captain.

He now steps into leadership, carrying both expectations and the story of a bat that once symbolized a family’s gamble on a dream.
