Archaeologists in Germany discovered that a 1244 cellar ceiling was built with at least 19 planks from a medieval lake-faring ship.
The wooden pieces cover roughly 270 square feet and date back to a building constructed in 1244. What first looked like a collection of old boards is now providing archaeologists with a rare opportunity to examine medieval shipbuilding techniques from a remarkably well-preserved set of remains.
A ship hidden in a cellar ceiling
The discovery emerged during an architectural history investigation by the State Office for Monument Preservation in Stuttgart. Researchers initially knew that the ceiling timber had been reused. The planks came from a flat-bottomed vessel designed to travel across lakes. Their characteristics, including nail patterns, wooden pegs and distinctive shapes, helped researchers identify them as parts of a ship's hull.
Even more revealing was the way several pieces had been positioned. Some boards remain in an arrangement close to how they would have appeared on the original vessel, suggesting that large sections of the hull may have been dismantled and reused rather than broken down into small pieces.
The basement itself played an important role in preserving the evidence. Because the timber has spent centuries in relatively dry conditions, it remains accessible for detailed examination.
Medieval repairs are still visible
The ceiling has preserved more than just the basic construction of the vessel.Researchers identified at least four locations where the ship had been repaired while it was still in service. Damaged sections of timber had been removed and replaced with carefully fitted pieces of wood.
One repair is particularly unusual. It features an insert shaped like a swallowtail, a technique that researchers say has not yet been matched by other medieval ship discoveries around Lake Constance.
Traces of the material once used to seal gaps between the wooden planks have also survived. These details could help researchers understand how medieval boatbuilders assembled and maintained vessels that operated on the region's waterways.
Why the discovery matters
Shipwrecks can provide valuable evidence about ancient and medieval boats, but underwater remains are often difficult to examine. Waterlogged timber can deteriorate once it is removed from its original environment and may require extensive conservation.The Constance discovery presents a different opportunity.
The hull timber was incorporated into a dry building, allowing researchers to study the wood directly and in considerable detail. That makes the cellar ceiling an unusual archaeological record of a vessel that might otherwise have disappeared entirely.
The find is particularly relevant to ongoing research into the history of Lake Constance, where archaeologists have been investigating evidence of historic vessels and wrecks as part of the State Office for Monument Preservation's wider maritime archaeology work.
Scientists are trying to establish the ship's age
Researchers have created a three-dimensional model and digital documentation of the ceiling and its individual planks.
