6G network launch: What we know so far

In this day and age of social media, having access to fast internet is critical no matter where we go. The internet is a necessity in today’s world, from office work to video calling and social media, according to a report. Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the latest technology in India at the MWC 2022, and since then, Airtel and Jio have been working tirelessly to expand their telecom networks across the country. While the world has been focusing on 5G technology, South Korea is reportedly planning to launch a technology that is a step ahead- ‘6G’.

According to the ICT Ministry, South Korea plans to launch a sixth-generation network service by 2028, two years ahead of its original schedule.

According to a media report, the government will encourage local companies to manufacture materials, components, and equipment for 6G technology in the country, as well as develop an open RAN or open radio access network, which will be compatible with any mobile device and supported by mobile carriers and enterprises.

Will India be the first to deploy 6G technology?

According to the ministry, the plan, which will cost $481.7 million, is being studied for a research and development project on the core of 6G technology. The plan aims to assist India in maintaining its leadership position in the global competition for future network infrastructure as 5G networks race to meet the growing demand for faster wireless communications with lower latency, as per the report.

We have been experiencing 5G technology, which is rapidly growing in the country. As the 5G rollout accelerates, India is said to have risen to 10th place in the world in average mobile speed in January 2023, after falling from 79th to 69th in December.

According to network intelligence and connectivity insights provider Ookla, the country has risen two places in the global rankings for overall average fixed broadband speed (from 81st in December to 79th in January). In India, the overall fixed median download speed increased slightly from 49.14 Mbps in December to 50.02 Mbps in January (report states). In November, India ranked 105th in the world in terms of average mobile speed.
