₹36 lakh job offer vs ₹25 lakh salary: Gurugram techie says higher package brings lower take-home, flags Mumbai cost worries
A Gurugram-based tech professional faces a career crossroads. A new job offer in Mumbai promises a higher annual salary but a reduced monthly take-home amount. This is due to a significant performance-based variable component. Relocation to Mumbai...

Higher CTC but Lower Monthly In-Hand
The Mumbai-based opportunity offers a compensation of ₹36 lakh per annum (LPA), significantly higher than the current ₹25 LPA the techie earns in Gurugram. However, a detailed breakdown revealed an unexpected twist, lower monthly in-hand salary. The key difference lies in the structure of the salary. While the current package is entirely fixed, the new offer includes a sizable performance-based variable component of ₹6 lakh.
Current vs New Salary Breakdown
Explaining the situation, the techie shared: "I currently live in Gurgaon. I have around 5.8 YOE in Analytics and Data Science, and my current CTC is Rs 25.25 LPA, which is fully fixed, so I get Rs 1.72L per month in-hand (after deductions for Tax, PF, NPS, and food coupons)," the user said in a Reddit post. When calculating the new offer’s in-hand salary based on the fixed ₹30 LPA (excluding the variable component), the monthly earnings come out slightly lower.
"I did the in-hand calculation based on 30 LPA (since the 6L variable will only be credited at year-end), and it's coming out to Rs 1.68L/month (after yearly tax and PF deductions)," the techie said.
"So my monthly in-hand at 36 LPA is actually lower than what I'm currently getting at 25 LPA. My current designation is senior analyst, business intelligence and my new designation will be senior data scientist-Gen AI."
Relocation Concerns Add to Dilemma
Apart from the salary structure, the job requires relocating from Gurugram to Mumbai, another major factor influencing the decision. The higher cost of living in Mumbai, especially housing, is raising concerns about whether the move would be financially beneficial.Internet Weighs In
Social media users were quick to share their opinions, with many advising caution due to the relocation and cost implications."If it requires relocation to Mumbai, I don't think it's worth it," said one user.
Another commented, ""Not worth it in Mumbai. The rent will eat up your salary. You'll most likely have to take a flat far from your office"
