A 35-year-old woman from Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, died under mysterious circumstances during an alleged occult ritual conducted by a local tantrik. The incident took place on Sunday evening in Pahalwan Pur village, located in the Kandharapur police station limits.

The woman, Anuradha, who had been married for 10 years but had no children, had visited a tantrik named Chandu with her mother after hearing that he could help women conceive through spiritual practices. During the visit, the tantrik and his aides claimed that Anuradha was possessed by an evil spirit. According to the family, the ritual turned violent, with Anuradha being subjected to hair-pulling, forceful pressure on her neck and mouth, and even being made to drink dirty water from a drain and toilet. Her mother, who was present during the ritual, tried to intervene but was ignored.

As Anuradha’s health deteriorated rapidly, Chandu and his associates rushed her to the district hospital. She was declared dead by doctors around 9 PM. The group fled the hospital, abandoning the body.

The family later brought Anuradha’s body back to their village and demanded action against those responsible. Upon receiving the report, Kandharapur SHO K K Gupta and City Circle Officer visited the site. The woman’s father, Baliram Yadav, informed the police that Chandu had taken a contract worth ₹1 lakh to help Anuradha conceive, of which ₹22,000 had already been paid in advance.

Following Baliram's complaint, police registered an FIR, sent the body for autopsy, and launched an investigation.

Tantrik Chandu eventually surrendered at the police station, but the police are still trying to locate his accomplices. SP City Madhuban Kumar Singh said, "In Pahalwan Pur village of Kandharapur area, Anuradha, daughter of Baliram Yadav, died under suspicious circumstances. Her father alleged that a local tantrik named Chandu, along with his wife and two others, strangled her to death under the guise of performing occult rituals. Based on the father’s complaint, an FIR has been registered and investigation is underway."

Anuradha was the eldest of three siblings. Locals revealed that Chandu had set up a deceptive spiritual centre in his home, decorated with small temples, bells, and idols to lure people. Residents from surrounding villages often sought his help. Some villagers also claimed that similar incidents had taken place there before.
