2024 Paris Olympics: French organisers reveal plans to use AI-assisted system to control crowd

French authorities intend to utilise an AI-assisted crowd management system to monitor individuals during the 2024 Paris Olympics as per the proposed legislation acquired by AFP on the December 22.

Gerald Darmanin, the interior minister, and organisers have both advocated in favour of utilising supposedly "intelligent" "software for security cameras that searches through photos for suspicious or harmful activity.

It is an "experiment" to employ such a system during the Olympics "but might be used for next public events that confront crowd management or terrorism-related threats, according to the proposed law.


The organising committee for the games said on November 21 that it would need to increase its budget estimate by 10%, from 3.98 billion euros to 4.48 billion euros, in part due to inflation.

The system won't make use of face recognition technology, but it is meant to help security agencies identify disruptions and possible issues more swiftly.

The technology may prove especially helpful during the extremely ambitious open-air opening ceremony, which will feature Olympians floating down the Seine in front of 600,000 spectators.

A ceremony featuring a flotilla of over 200 boats travelling down the Seine on July 26, 2024, will start the games instead of the typical athletics stadium.

The government estimates 100,000 people can view from the riverbanks with tickets required, while another 500,000 can observe for free from street level.

The proposed bill is anticipated to be discussed in parliament in January, and President Emmanuel Macron's minority administration will require cooperation from opposition parties to enact it.
