The International Migration Centre-Karnataka (IMC-K), a division of the state government's department of skill development entrepreneurship and livelihood, is conducting interviews for truck and bus drivers to work in two European nations, which is a first-time initiative.

As per Mohith, a district counselor from the department, Poland requires bus drivers while Hungary is in need of truck drivers.

Applicants do not need any specific educational qualifications. However, they should possess Indian heavy truck licenses issued before September 2009 and have good English communication skills, as stated to TOI.

As per the authorities, applicants' driving abilities will be assessed at the automated driving test track in Yelahanka, located in Bengaluru, on June 20 and 21. The test is open to both male and female drivers. Selected candidates will receive free visa and air tickets. After undergoing six months of training, they will be entitled to a monthly salary ranging from Rs 1 lakh to 1.5 lakh. During the training period, candidates will receive a stipend of approximately 50,000 to 60,000.

Meanwhile, truck owners’ association members said that for every 100 trucks, they are getting just 70 drivers as the shortage of drivers is reported across the country now.

According to GR Shanmukhappa, the General Secretary (South Zone) of the South India Motor Transport Association and President of the Karnataka State Lorry Owners and Agents' Association, the transportation industry is currently grappling with a major shortage of drivers, which is its primary challenge.

“Here we offer a salary of Rs 35,000 a month which on the other hand is above Rs 1 lakh in other countries. We are aware of the increasing demand for our drivers in Western countries,” Shanmukhappa added.
