After making headlines with his explosive batting performances, teenage cricket sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is now set to become the subject of an academic study. The 15-year-old, who clinched a record five awards in IPL 2026, will be analysed by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Indore.

Study to Focus on Impact of Early Fame

The research aims to understand how early success, fame, and pressure influence the future of child prodigies. A senior official confirmed on Tuesday that the study will centre on Sooryavanshi, who emerged as the leading run-scorer of the season with 776 runs in 16 innings at a remarkable strike rate of 237.30.

He also secured the Most Valuable Player award and the Orange Cap, along with scoring one century and five half-centuries.

Understanding What Drives Exceptional Talent

IIM Indore Director Himanshu Rai told PTI that the study will go beyond cricketing achievements to explore deeper factors behind extraordinary performance.

Rai said, "We want to understand what factors drive the extraordinary performance of child prodigies. Personality, behaviour, and practice patterns, along with the support of parents, teachers, coaches, and seniors, are crucial for such performance."

He further highlighted that while many young talents achieve early success, they often face challenges linked to fame and expectations.

"In our study, we also want to look at how to deal with such expectations or obstacles," Rai maintained.

Why Sooryavanshi Was Chosen

According to Rai, cricket’s immense popularity in India makes it a high-pressure sport, especially for young players. This made Sooryavanshi an ideal case study to examine how public scrutiny impacts rising stars.

The Bihar-born left-handed batter also broke Chris Gayle’s IPL record for most sixes in a season, smashing 72 sixes and surpassing the previous mark of 59.

Fearless Performance Against Top Bowlers

Sooryavanshi impressed fans and experts alike with his aggressive style and confidence against some of the world’s best bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah, Kagiso Rabada, and Pat Cummins.

Multidisciplinary Research Approach

The study will involve experts from multiple disciplines, including psychology, sociology, human resources, communication, and behavioural sciences. It is expected to begin within the next two weeks and conclude in about three months.

Broader Impact Beyond Cricket

Rai emphasised that the research will not be limited to sports. Its findings could also apply to young achievers in fields such as mathematics, science, and the arts.

The ultimate goal is to develop practical insights and policy recommendations that support the balanced and sustainable growth of young talent.

Findings to Be Shared Widely

The results of the study will be submitted to academic journals and shared with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Rai added.
