Heavy overnight rains slowed movement across Mumbai, prompting closures and delays in both road and rail transport, civic officials confirmed on Monday. Major road stretches and low-lying areas in the city experienced waterlogging, affecting traffic and raising concern among commuters.

Mumbai Rain Update: Waterlogging at Key Locations

Mumbai Traffic Police confirmed slow movement at the following sites due to accumulated rainwater:

  • Centaur Bridge (Vakola) northbound: waterlogged.
  • S.R.P.F Gate (Jogeshwari) southbound: around one foot of water.
  • Vakola Bridge near Panbai School northbound: half a foot of water.
  • Kurla S.C.L.R. Bridge: waterlogging causing slow traffic.
  • The Andheri subway was shut temporarily after heavy flooding disrupted the normally busy route

Mumbai Rain Update and Forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported 114.6 mm rainfall at the Santacruz station, marking the first triple-digit rainfall of the month. In contrast, Colaba received only 11.2 mm, highlighting uneven distribution across the city.

A civic official said the island city received 23.45 mm, eastern suburbs recorded 36.42 mm, and western suburbs got 50.02 mm of rain in the 24 hours ending 8 a.m. Monday.

Office-goers faced traffic congestion on both the Eastern Express Highway and Western Express Highway. Several local train routes also experienced minor delays, adding to the Monday morning disruptions.

Mumbai Rain IMD Forecast: More Rain and Thunderstorms Likely

The weather department has forecast generally cloudy skies with moderate rain and isolated thunderstorms in the city and suburbs for the next 24 hours. A civic official stated that a high tide of 3.91 metres occurred at 9:19 a.m., with another one of 3.38 metres expected at 8:37 p.m. A low tide of 2.28 metres was expected at 3:03 p.m.

IMD officials said the rainfall is being driven by a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which is intensifying rainfall along the Maharashtra coast.

While no red alert has been issued, the IMD advised residents to remain cautious, particularly during the evening when more showers are expected.

Mumbai Rain: Airlines Advisory

Airlines operating out of Mumbai have issued travel advisories to passengers amid slow-moving traffic around the airport.

"Heavy rain showers have settled in over #Mumbai, and the roads are feeling the impact. Several routes towards the airport are seeing slow-moving traffic due to steady downpour. If you are flying today, please plan ahead, leave a little earlier, and check your flight status on our app or website before stepping out. We understand these conditions can affect your journey. Our teams are ready to support you on the ground and are working to keep operations running as steadily as possible. Thank you for your understanding."

SpiceJet wrote:
"Due to bad weather (heavy rain) in Mumbai (BOM), all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights may get affected. Passengers are requested to keep a check on their flight status."
