According to WR's chief public relations officer, Sumit Thakur, the infrastructure work aims to improve the number of services on WR while ensuring minimal disruption to suburban services. Currently, the Western Railway corridor between Mumbai Central and Borivli has four lines - two slow and two fast. Additionally, there is a fifth line known as the suburban train avoidance (STA) line, which is used by long-distance trains from Mumbai Central and Bandra Terminus. The sixth line will separate mail/express trains from suburban trains, and a crossover from the fifth to the sixth line will be provided at Ram Mandir station. This will allow trains to be diverted in case of any breakdown or disruption in services on the sixth line.
The work on connecting the sixth line, covering a distance of 8.8km, began on October 7 and is expected to be completed in 28 more days. Currently, slewing, which involves shifting a section of a track sideways to position it correctly, is in progress. As a result, there will be daily cancellations of services until the work is completed in the first week of November.
After the completion of the work, the commissioner of railway safety (western circle) will inspect the line, following which services will be operational. Once the line is extended till Borivli, it will lead to a 20 per cent increase in services on WR.
