World War III: Why is Trump's 'Doomsday Plane' flying across US? Nuclear-proof aircraft spotted heading to unknown location
US President Donald Trump's emergency aircraft, the Boeing E-4B Nightwatch, popularly known as the "Doomsday Plane", was spotted flying across the United States on Thursday, sparking questions about its mission and destination.

The nuclear-resistant aircraft was seen heading east after departing its home base in Nebraska. However, the reason for the flight remains unknown, and no official information has been released about its destination or who was aboard.

Flight-tracking data showed the aircraft taking off from Offutt Air Force Base near Omaha and travelling across the Midwest. The base houses a fleet of E-4B aircraft, suggesting that the flight could have been part of a routine military exercise, reports The Express US.

According to subsequent flight-tracking updates, the aircraft was spotted over northern Virginia, west of Washington, D.C., before heading south. However, the tracking images did not identify a destination, and its route does not establish where it will land or why it was dispatched.

There has been no public statement explaining the purpose of the flight. The Express US reached out to the White House for comment.

What is Trump's 'Doomsday Plane' and why is it called that?

The Boeing E-4B Nightwatch is designed to serve as an airborne command centre for the US president, senior government officials and military leaders during a national emergency.

The aircraft is built to withstand the effects of a nuclear attack and allows the commander in chief to direct American military forces if ground-based command centres become unavailable.

It is equipped with advanced communication systems designed to withstand electromagnetic pulses generated by nuclear explosions. The aircraft can also refuel in midair, allowing it to remain airborne and operational for up to 35.4 hours.

Whenever the president is in the United States, at least one aircraft from the E-4B fleet remains ready for deployment at a moment's notice from Offutt Air Force Base.

Why was Trump's emergency aircraft flying across the US?

The reason behind Thursday's flight remains unclear. Flight-tracking data showed the aircraft departing Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska before travelling east across the country.

Since the base hosts several E-4B aircraft, the movement could have been linked to a routine military drill or training exercise. However, there has been no official confirmation of this explanation.

The aircraft was later tracked over northern Virginia, west of Washington, D.C., before heading south. Its destination was not disclosed in the tracking data.

There has also been no confirmation that Trump or any senior government official was aboard the aircraft.

Doomsday Plane spotted after Trump renews threats against Iran

The aircraft's flight came hours after Trump renewed his threats against Iran during a surprise press briefing in the Oval Office on Thursday.

The president suggested that the US could completely destroy the country if necessary while discussing the ongoing conflict.

Speaking to reporters after declaring the Oval Office and Cabinet Room national monuments, Trump said he would "rather not destroy the rest of the country if possible, but maybe I'll have to. You'll know soon enough."

Trump also said the US military was producing more weapons than ever before and claimed American forces were "locked and loaded if we have to do the rest of the Iran thing."

The president further claimed that the US had achieved significant success with its blockade and had control over the Strait of Hormuz. He also said Iran would need 25 years to rebuild.

However, there has been no official confirmation linking the E-4B Nightwatch flight to Trump's latest remarks or threats against Iran.
