Why Mount Halti is making headlines
Halti is at the border between Norway and Finland.

Mount Halti. More like a fell in Europe.
What about it?
Halti is at the border between Norway and Finland. The peak of the fell is in Norway, about 1 km north of the border with Finland.
Is this a geography lesson?
No. But how about a mountain peak as a birthday gift?
Please explain Halti.
Finland will be turning 100 on December 6 this year. As a gift, Norway wants to get it a pretty impressive birthday present — a 4,300-ft mountain
Halti?
Exactly. To commemorate the anniversary, and as a token of friendship, there's a campaign afoot in Norway to gift the peak.
That’s one quirky birthday gift!
The idea for this gift came from former Norwegian state surveyor Bjorn Geirr Harsson. In 1972, while conducting a border survey, Harsson discovered that the mountain itself is situated in Finland, and only its peak is technically in Norway.
What about the authorities?
Interesting.
Yes. A short film Battle for Birthday Mountain has been released which chronicles the efforts of Harsson to convince Norway to alter its national borders.
What about the campaign?
Article 1 of the kingdom’s constitution states that Norway is 'indivisible and inalienable'. But the Norse people believe that in a time of increasing global tensions, the gift would come as a historic gesture of international friendship.
Sounds about right!
Moving a national border of a sovereign country is a really big deal. Harsson is actually ‘moving mountains’ for peace, you see.
