El-Sayed, an Egyptian American and former public health official, made history by becoming the first Muslim elected to the US Senate. Speaking at his election headquarters in Detroit, El-Sayed, the son of Egyptian immigrants, said, "Michigan, we did it! I am so proud and honoured to stand here as your Senator-elect from the great state of Michigan".
The victory marks a significant turnaround for El-Sayed, who has never held elected office. He had suffered a double-digit defeat in Michigan's Democratic gubernatorial primary in 2018. His campaign also faced a last-minute setback when Congresswoman Haley Stevens, who lost the Democratic primary to El-Sayed, announced her support for Republican Mike Rogers shortly before the election.
El-Sayed's campaign focused on universal healthcare, reducing the influence of outside money in politics and criticism of Israel, according to several reports. "You deserve to be able to see a doctor without getting a huge bill," El-Sayed said while addressing Michigan voters on the eve of the election.
He pledged to challenge the country's for-profit healthcare system, get "money out of politics" and address the economic difficulties faced by Americans.
