Democratic US Rep. Ilhan Omar’s home in the Washington, D.C., area was searched by federal agents on Monday morning as part of an ongoing criminal investigation, the Associated Press reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Agents from Homeland Security Investigations carried out the search under a judicially authorised warrant, the Justice Department confirmed, without disclosing further details.

The development has renewed attention on Omar’s personal life, including her husband, amid years of attacks from US President Donald Trump. Trump has repeatedly alleged that the Minnesota congresswoman married her brother. “I believe she married her brother, which is totally illegal,” Trump said at a May 2026 event.

“I believe she married her brother, which is totally illegal,” he added. “Although, it's a lovely couple, actually, but it's a little bit on the illegal side. 'Darling. I love you very much. Goodnight, brother. Let's go to bed," the President had said.

In March 2020, Omar addressed the relationship on X, stating that her romance with Mynett began "long after" they had started working together. She also said she had sought legal advice to ensure there were no legal issues surrounding their relationship.

"As a family, we are committed to the practice of joy, compassion and love in our politics," the congresswoman added. "And we are giving ourselves the permission to be happy and hope others will as well."

Tim campaigned for Omar till 2020

Mynett’s firm continued working for Omar’s campaign until November 2020, according to Fox News. However, the FEC complaint against Omar’s campaign was later dismissed. Mynett left E Street Group in 2022 and has since served as president and co-founder of Rose Lake Capital.

Mynett denied allegations of an affair at the time, describing them as part of a smear campaign. Omar’s spokesperson declined to comment on the allegations when PEOPLE reached out after the couple married.

Omar, 44, represents Minnesota’s 5th District, including Minneapolis. She was first elected to the House in 2018 and has been known as a member of what's called The Squad of female lawmakers known for their progressive views and pointed opposition to the Republican president.
