New York, Oct 26 (IANS) At least 16 people were reportedly killed and more than 50 others were injured on Wednesday night in multiple shootings in the US city of Lewiston, Maine.
In the wake of the mass shooting event that unfolded in Lewiston, Maine, on Wednesday evening, police authorities have revealed some critical details about the suspected gunman behind the shootings. The incidents which left 22 people dead and over 50 injured, have sparked renewed concerns regarding public safety and offer the not-so-rare glimpse into the impact mental health systems can have in such cases. Here's what we know about the suspect, Robert Card.

Hailing from Boutin, Maine, 40-year-old Robert Card, with connections to the Army Reserve, has emerged as the primary suspect in the mass shootings.

Over the years, Card has reportedly grappled with several mental health issues, and even claimed to hear distressing voices. He even voiced threats of violence, including a chilling plan to carry out a shooting at the National Guard Base where he was stationed. These startling revelations were reported by the New York Post.

During the summer of this year, Card's mental health struggles led to his admission to a mental health facility. After a two-week stay, he was released, but the specific reasons for his commitment and the results of his mental health evaluation remain shrouded in secrecy.

As law enforcement authorities intensify their efforts to locate Card, they have released pictures of a white Subaru Outback they believe might be linked to him. The question of whether this vehicle was used during the tragic events or merely connected to Card's personal possessions remains unresolved.

The motivations behind the mass shootings remains unknown and is shrouded in uncertainty. Nevertheless, the knowledge of Card's prior violent inclinations and his history of mental health issues casts a shadow on the mechanisms in place to oversee individuals with similar backgrounds, particularly those who have access to firearms.

The local police shared a photo of the shooter on Facebook, carrying what appeared to be a semi-automatic style weapon inside the bowling alley. They have requested anyone with information on his identity to come forward. Additionally, a picture of a white SUV car was released, and the public's assistance is sought in identifying the vehicle, as its front bumper may have been painted black.

In response to the incident, Maine state police issued an urgent social media alert advising residents to seek refuge in their homes and close their doors. Several investigations are being conducted by law enforcement to ensure the safety of the community.
