What next for Muhammad Yunus as Tarique’s BNP takes charge in Bangladesh?
Rahman’s International Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir told NDTV that no specific role had been discussed. “There was no discussion on any defined role. The discussion was more based on Tarique Rahman Sahab's interest in inclusive governance,” Kabir said, adding that Rahman is keen to consult eminent citizens and “use all the talents available” if elected to office. He reiterated that no position has been finalised for Yunus.

Bangladesh’s parliamentary election delivered a decisive mandate for the BNP, positioning Rahman to take charge as prime minister. Yunus had assumed leadership in August 2024 after a student-led uprising forced Sheikh Hasina from power. Throughout his interim tenure, he maintained that his role was that of a caretaker guiding the country through a transitional phase, not that of a political contender.
Citing political analyst Professor Rajan Kumar, TOI reported that Yunus is unlikely to fade entirely from the national landscape and could continue to play an advisory role, formally or informally, particularly on economic and governance issues. Kumar was quoted as saying Yunus “fits perfectly” within a broader anti-Hasina political alignment and may not face resistance under a BNP-led government.
Yunus’s Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam, however, told NDTV that the Nobel laureate has “zero interest in politics” and intends to return to his earlier work once his interim responsibilities conclude. Alam said Yunus plans to advance his “three zeros” vision; zero poverty, zero unemployment and zero net carbon emissions and expand social business initiatives, with a focus on engaging young people.
Dr Muhammad Yunus is a Bangladeshi economist, social entrepreneur and Nobel Peace Prize laureate widely credited with pioneering the global microcredit and microfinance movement. He founded Grameen Bank, a model of small, collateral-free loans aimed at empowering the poorest, especially women inspiring similar programmes in more than 100 countries and earning him the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize for promoting “economic and social development from below.”
Yunus has also been a founding board member of the Grameen Foundation, whose mission is rooted in his vision of a world free from poverty and hunger, and has championed inclusive finance and social business for decades
During his time in office, Yunus concentrated on stabilising the country, overseeing reforms and conducting what were described as credible elections. TOI reported that his administration proposed measures including two-term limits for prime ministers, stronger judicial independence, enhanced representation for women, neutral interim governments during elections and the creation of a second parliamentary chamber. A referendum held alongside the general election sought public backing for these reforms.
As Bangladesh enters a new five-year political cycle under BNP leadership, the incoming government faces immediate challenges, from managing ties with India and balancing Chinese influence to preventing radicalisation, ensuring civilian control over the military and reviving economic growth amid global pressures.
Yunus has not publicly outlined his next move and is expected to speak after formally handing over power. For now, his aides have told NDTV that he does not intend to pursue any constitutional role and plans to return to his social business work once the transition is complete.
