What is Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve?

Tsaritsyno is a palace museum and park reserve in southern Moscow. Its name, derived from the Russian word for the empress, is commonly associated with the phrase "Tsaritsa's property."

The estate was established in 1775 as the summer residence of Empress Catherine II. However, the palace complex was never completed during her reign and remained largely abandoned for much of its history, with its unfinished buildings becoming picturesque ruins.

The palace was restored in the 2000s, following its original architectural plans. Today, Tsaritsyno is a major museum and cultural complex, as well as a popular recreational destination for Moscow residents and tourists.

Russia-Ukraine war and tensions with the West

The security alert comes amid continued tensions between Russia and Western countries over the Russia-Ukraine war, which began with Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The invasion triggered the most serious confrontation between Russia and the West since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, when the world came close to a nuclear conflict.
