'We would have won a landslide': Trump claims he would have won big if on ballot as Democrats on course for midterms rout
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday claimed the Republicans would have secured a landslide victory had he been on the ballot in the midterm elections, as Democrats made significant gains in congressional races and challenged Republican control of Congress.

"I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP," Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform.

The remark came as Republicans faced setbacks in several closely watched contests, with Democrats making gains in key races and strengthening their position in the battle for control of the House of Representatives.

Democrats flipped four Republican-held House seats, putting them on course to take control of the chamber, according to election results reported by Reuters. The Senate picture, however, remained uncertain. Most US media outlets have projected that the Democrats are going to secure control of the House.

In Georgia, Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff won re-election, while former Democratic governor Roy Cooper captured a Senate seat in North Carolina, flipping it from Republican control.

The results represented a significant test of Trump's influence over the Republican Party, with voters weighing in on his administration's economic policies, inflation, healthcare and other issues.

Trump had campaigned for Republican candidates in the run-up to Election Day, appearing at rallies in several states in an effort to mobilise support for his party.

His Truth Social post did not cite specific election results or offer evidence for his claim that he would have won by a landslide had he contested the elections.

The 2026 midterms are particularly consequential for Trump's remaining time in office, as control of Congress will shape the administration's ability to advance its legislative agenda and determine the extent of congressional scrutiny of the White House.
