'We don’t need more wars...': Palestinian envoy urges UN to stop Israel's plan for Gaza takeover

The Israeli government’s plan for a full-scale military takeover of Gaza will cause more deaths and suffering and must be halted immediately, UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk said on Friday (August 8). The plan runs contrary to the ruling of the International Court of Justice that Israel must bring its occupation to an end as soon as possible, to the realisation of the agreed two-state solution and to the right of Palestinians to self-determination, Turk said in a statement. Palestinian U.N. Ambassador Riyad Mansour called the move “in total contradiction to the will of the international community, international law and common sense,” and said it was opposed even by “the majority of the people inside Israel” according to opinion polls. “Enough is enough. We don’t need more wars, more killing, more agonies, more occupation, more genocide,” he told reporters at U.N. headquarters.
