Russian President Vladimir Putin showcased his lighter side on Thursday by trying out Gen Z slang while speaking on regional development and Asia-Pacific cooperation at the 10th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF). The two-day event, held September 4–5 in Vladivostok, focused largely on economic growth, infrastructure expansion, and energy partnerships, but a lighthearted moment came during Putin’s visit to the city’s new branch of the National Centre “Russia,” a cultural hub aimed at engaging youth.

During the visit, a young woman explained how common Russian phrases translate into Gen Z slang. Neutral lines like “It might be an easy game” were rephrased as “It’ll be a chill sesh,” while “Guys, this problem is total absurdity” turned into “Guys, these troubles are total cringe.”

Putin, known for his stern demeanor, was filmed listening carefully, appearing focused as he followed the lesson. The video quickly spread online, amusing viewers with the sight of the Russian leader learning youth slang.

Despite the light moment, the forum carried significant weight. Putin emphasized accelerating development in Russia’s Far East, spotlighting infrastructure initiatives and stronger energy ties with Asia-Pacific countries. He connected the region’s progress to Moscow’s strategic pivot to Asia, reinforced by his recent trip to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Tianjin.
