Venezuela opposition leader Juan Pablo Guanipa freed as house arrest is lifted after amnesty move
Venezuelan opposition politician Juan Pablo Guanipa, a close ally of Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado, has had a house arrest order lifted, his brother and lawmaker Tomás Guanipa told Reuters late on Thursday (February 19) night. The move follows the ruling party-controlled legislature's approval on Thursday of a limited amnesty law. Guanipa was imprisoned for more than eight months on accusations of leading a terrorist plot, which he has denied. Earlier this month, he was freed from jail and then recaptured within hours after speaking to the media in Caracas and meeting supporters.
