USA describes Tibet as a military occupied territory; Dalai Lama urged to address US Congress

New Delhi: Increasing pressure on the Chinese Communisy Party the USA for the first time has called Tibet as a militarily occupied territory of China. Earlier this week the US House of Representatives passed a bill affirming the significance of the advocacy for genuine autonomy for Tibetans, and the work done by the 14th Dalai Lama to promote global peace, harmony, and understanding.

The report ‘The Elements of the China Challenge’, released by the office of the US Secretary of State, highlighted the Chinese Communist Party’s (CPC) occupation and suppression of various territories and peoples.

“The CCP devotes considerable resources to the repression of ethnic and religious minorities. In gross violation of the principles set forth in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the CCP maintains a military occupation of Tibet that dates to the 1950s, conducts a brutal program in Xinjiang to re-educate Uyghurs and millions of other Turkic Muslims, oppresses ethnic Mongolians in China’s Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region, and imposes onerous regulations on China’s Christians, who number around 70 million,” the report pointed out.


The report alleged, “As part of China’s national policy to forcibly integrate minorities, which is sometimes referred to as stability maintenance, the CCP has heightened repression of some 6 million Tibetans — severely restricting freedom of speech, religion, movement, association, and assembly.”

Earlier a bipartisan resolution recognising the cultural and religious significance of an autonomous Tibet was also passed by the House of Representatives of the USA.

The House bill also suggested that the Dalai Lama address the US Congress. “It would be beneficial to convene a bipartisan, bicameral forum, either through a Joint Meeting of Congress, a teleconference broadcast in the Auditorium at the Capitol Visitor Center, or roundtable, between Members of Congress and His Holiness the Dalai Lama to discuss peaceful solutions to international conflicts."
