US President Donald Trump gestures at a midterm election campaign rally
US President Donald Trump will join some chosen cabinet members and political associates in observing the results of the 2026 midterm elections at the White House, where Republicans are eagerly waiting for the results of the fiercely contested elections that may influence the dynamics in Congress, CNN reported.

President Trump is reportedly hosting a private meeting in the White House East Room, while operations conducted by the administration and MAGA Inc., a political organisation controlled by Trump, are keeping tabs on the results from sites on the presidential compound and its surroundings, as per CNN.

The meeting has reportedly been planned in the past couple of days as there has been a demand among Republicans and Trump associates to spend Election Night with the president. This comes after a similar move during the 2022 midterm elections, when the president hosted a results-night meeting at his Florida home Mar-a-Lago.

But the political context in which the two elections took place is very much different.

In 2022, Trump was a former president looking forward to another presidential election. He had spent a lot of political currency on supporting candidates with his MAGA platform, hoping that their wins would give him more leverage within the Republican Party.

As part of the final leg of that election cycle, Trump campaigned for all across the United States in favour of candidates whom he endorsed. The Mar-a-Lago event was planned against the backdrop of hope amongst Trump's advisors of winning big.

The results, however, did not match those expectations.

Several high-profile candidates backed by Trump struggled in important races, disappointing the former president and his political team. As the scale of the setbacks became clearer, tensions reportedly emerged between Trump and his advisers over the candidate selection process. Journalists attending the gathering were eventually asked to leave.

This time, Trump will be following the results from the White House as the sitting president, having completed the political comeback he had pursued after leaving office in 2021.

Yet, according to sources cited by CNN, there are concerns within his administration that Republicans could once again face disappointing results.

It has been reported that Trump has remained optimistic about the chances of pre-election polls underestimating Republican strength.

He has explained to his aides that his engagement in the campaign, which includes political expenditures, telephone rallies, and fundraisers for Republican candidates, might keep the party in the race.

Despite that optimism, sources familiar with the discussions told CNN that Trump has privately acknowledged that Republicans could face a difficult outcome.

Two White House officials told the news outlet that the administration was preparing for different scenarios, including the possibility of Trump addressing reporters as the election results emerge.
