Democrats are projected to gain control of the US House of Representatives after the upcoming midterm elections
Democrats are projected to wrest control of the US House of Representatives from Republicans in Tuesday’s midterm elections, according to Decision Desk HQ, setting up a major shift in Washington and a potential check on US President Donald Trump’s agenda, Bloomberg reported.

NBC News and CNN also projected that Democrats would win control of the House, joining Decision Desk HQ in calling the chamber for the party.

The projected Democratic victory came amid widespread voter dissatisfaction over the cost of living, compounded by opposition to the unpopular war in Iran.

Republicans struggled to distance themselves from Trump as his approval ratings fell to record lows in the weeks before the election.

The president had repeatedly urged supporters to turn out, framing the midterms as a contest in which his own political standing was at stake.

A change in control of the House would significantly alter the balance of power in Washington, ending Republicans’ ability to push legislation through the chamber solely with their own votes.

Democrats would gain greater influence over the legislative agenda and congressional oversight of the Trump administration.

The new balance of power would take effect on January 3, when the next Congress convenes. However, a Democratic majority in the House would not necessarily translate into major legislative gains, as Republicans would retain control of the White House and Trump would continue to wield his presidential veto.

Bloomberg reported that the shift was likely to constrain Trump's ability to advance his domestic agenda, even as the president retained the power to block legislation passed by a Democratic-controlled House.
