When will we know midterm election results?

Some election winners may be declared on election night or early Wednesday morning (IST). However, closely contested House and Senate races could take several days to decide. Official results are announced only after local authorities complete vote counting, canvassing, any required audits and certification.

These states make take longer time

California and Washington may take longer because of the large volume of mail-in ballots. Arizona also has procedures that can delay the release of results after polls close. Alaska’s Senate contest could take longer because of ranked-choice voting, with additional counting rounds potentially needed.

What happens if Republicans lose the midterm?

If Democrats gain control of either the House or the Senate, they will have more power to influence legislation, government funding and investigations into the Trump administration. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries has also promised to increase scrutiny of the administration.

If Democrats take control of the Senate, they will also gain greater authority over the approval of Trump's judicial and senior government appointments. However, passing a law generally requires approval from both the House and Senate, followed by the president's signature.

Trump can still veto any legislation passed by Congress. Overriding his veto would require a two-thirds majority in both chambers. Even if Democrats win control of Congress, Trump will remain president.

On the other hand, if Republicans retain control of both chambers, Trump will have an easier time advancing his legislative agenda. However, narrow Republican majorities could still make passing bills difficult.
