Here is an hour-by-hour breakdown of when voters can expect the first updates:
- 6 pm ET (11 pm GMT): The first preliminary results are expected from parts of Indiana and Kentucky, where some polling stations will close. These early figures will offer an initial indication of voting trends.

- 7 pm–7:30 pm ET: Polls will close in several states, including Georgia, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia, North Carolina and Ohio. Early vote counts from battleground states such as North Carolina and Ohio will be particularly important.
- 11 pm–1 am ET: Polling will wrap up across the West Coast, followed by Alaska and Hawaii, bringing the voting process to a close nationwide.
Which states are likely to report results first?
- Florida: The state is often among the fastest to report results, partly because election officials can process mail-in ballots before Election Day.- Ohio: The state typically releases substantial early and absentee voting totals in its initial election-night updates.
- North Carolina and Pennsylvania: Both states process early and mail-in ballots ahead of Election Day, allowing officials to publish significant vote totals soon after polls close.
Which states could take days or weeks to declare winners?
While preliminary results may emerge on election night, some states could take considerably longer to determine winners, particularly in closely contested races.- California: The state conducts a large proportion of its voting by mail. Ballots postmarked by Election Day can arrive during the following week, potentially delaying final results in close races.
- Alaska and Maine: Both states use ranked-choice voting in certain elections. If no candidate secures the required majority in the initial count, additional rounds of vote redistribution may be necessary.
- Arizona and Nevada: Both states have significant mail-in voting, including ballots dropped off on Election Day. Signature verification and ballot processing can delay final counts.
- Washington: The state conducts elections primarily by mail and accepts eligible ballots postmarked by Election Day even if they arrive later.
