US Elections 2024: When does the winner of the 2024 American presidential election take office?

The next US president will take office on January 20, 2025. This date marks the Inauguration Day, which is the official start of the new presidential term following the 2024 election.

Inauguration Day occurs every four years on January 20 or January 21 if January 20 falls on a Sunday.

The ceremony takes place at the US Capitol in Washington, D.C., and includes the swearing-in of both the president-elect and the vice president-elect.

The vice president-elect is traditionally sworn in first, taking an oath that has been in use since 1884—the same one taken by senators, representatives, and other federal officials. Around noon, the president-elect takes the oath of office, as prescribed by Article II, Section I of the U.S. Constitution.

Until 1937, the presidential term began on March 4.

If a vice president assumes the presidency due to the death or resignation of a sitting president, the oath of office is administered immediately to ensure a seamless continuation of government. To date, nine vice presidents have taken office under such circumstances.
