The vice president-elect is traditionally sworn in first, taking an oath that has been in use since 1884—the same one taken by senators, representatives, and other federal officials. Around noon, the president-elect takes the oath of office, as prescribed by Article II, Section I of the U.S. Constitution.

Until 1937, the presidential term began on March 4.
