Maher described Loomer as "very close to Trump" and speculated, “I think maybe Laura Loomer's in an arranged relationship to influence the election because she's very close to Trump.” He added, “She's 31 and looks like his type.” Maher further stated, “Who's Trump f******? Because I said, it's not nobody. He's been a dog for too long. And it's not Melania. I think we may have our answer this week.”
In response, Loomer firmly denied any relationship with Trump and called Maher's claims a "complete and blatant lie." She threatened to sue Maher for defamation, terming the allegations as “incredibly disrespectful” to both Melania and Trump. She referred to the accusations as a coordinated attack against her as an investigative journalist.

Loomer accused Maher of "maliciously and deliberately defaming" her. She remarked, “It’s very obvious some type of memo went out because the reaction to what I said is completely overblown and it’s a full blown character assassination campaign.”

Maher also criticized Trump's recent debate performance, predicting that "it's over for him" in the presidential race. Despite the controversy, Trump stated that Loomer has no official role in his campaign. He acknowledged that he disagrees with some of her views but appreciates her support.
