US Congressman introduces resolution in House to designate March 23 as ‘Pakistan Day’

In a surprise but significant move that may boost US-Pakistan ties, the US House of Representatives has introduced a resolution to designate March 23 as ‘Pakistan Day’.

Congressman Jamaal Bowman of the Democratic Party, who represents New York, initiated the “landmark resolution”. This is the first such resolution introduced in the US Congress.

The resolution emphasised the importance of recognising and paying tribute to those who foster ethnic pride and enhance the profile of cultural diversity, which strengthens the fabric of the US communities.


Bowman in fact stated that it was an honour for him to introduce the resolution and stressed the importance of standing with the people of Pakistan during their time of crisis.

Bowman expressed his solidarity with Pakistan, which has been hit by a natural disaster and conveyed his message of peace and love to the people of Pakistan.

The resolution also highlighted that Pakistan Day provides an excellent opportunity for all US residents to learn more about Pakistan’s rich heritage and foster an appreciation for its ancient culture among future generations.

Pakistan’s ambassador to the US, Masood Khan, thanked Bowman for his initiative, which would bring the two countries and their people closer to each other.

Last year, India had expressed its reservations on the move made by the US to upgrade Pakistan’s F-16 fighter jet fleet.

Interestingly last year, two American Congressmen introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives urging the Biden administration to recognise the Pakistan Army’s atrocities against ethnic minorities during the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh.

The legislation that was brought by Congressmen Ro Khanna and Steve Chabot on October 14 had called on the Pakistan government, among other things, to apologise to the people of Bangladesh for its role in the genocide of ethnic Bengalis and Hindus during the war.
