UNSC members, including Pakistan, visit 9/11 memorial on eve of 25th anniversary of terror attacks

New York: UN Security Council members, including Pakistan, visited the 9/11 memorial on the eve of the 25th-anniversary of the horrific terror attacks perpetrated by al-Qaeda, whose leader, Osama bin Laden, was killed in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad.

US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz took his fellow UN Security Council Ambassadors to the 9/11 memorial in lower Manhattan.

"We reinforced our shared commitment to peace, security, and a world free from terror," Waltz said in a post on X.


The visit by the 15 envoys of the Security Council came on September 10, on the eve of the 25th-anniversary commemoration of the horrific terror attacks that killed thousands and forever changed the trajectory of the global war on terrorism.

A solemn ceremony commemorating the 25th anniversary of 9/11 was held at Ground Zero on Friday. The commemoration was held at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in Lower Manhattan, Ground Zero, where the former twin towers of the World Trade Centre stood before planes hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorists crashed into them on a crisp September 11 morning in 2001.

Pakistan currently sits in the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member, and its two-year term will end in December this year. Pakistan's UN envoy Asim Iftikhar Ahmad was among the UN ambassadors who visited the 9/11 memorial site.

The UN envoys were given a tour of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum that houses remnants of the horrific attacks.

The terror attacks, perpetrated by Al-Qaeda terrorists, were orchestrated by bin Laden, who was hiding in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad and killed by US Navy SEALs in a raid in May 2011.

"When this attack happened, it changed the entire world," Waltz said.

"The two and a half decades since, fighting the scourge of extremism. Now we have to be sure the entire world remembers."
