UNITED NATIONS: Gandhian principles have become more pertinent in 21st century when terrorism and violence are inflicting suffering on millions, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today said as the world body commemorated Mahatma Gandhi's 145th birth anniversary, marking International Day of Non-violence.

Swaraj presided over the ceremony here and paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi on the 'International Day of Non-Violence' organised by the Indian mission to the UN.

Highlighting Gandhi's message of ahimsa and satyagraha, Swaraj said his philosophy have become even more pertinent in the 21st century when terrorism, violence and conflict are inflicting untold suffering on millions of men, women and children.

During the event, attended by a large number of UN ambassadors, diplomats and young children, an audio-visual on Gandhi's life and journey was played.

Swaraj also presented a large portrait of Gandhi to the president of the United Nations General Assembly, Sam Kutesa.

The portrait depicting Gandhi spinning the charkha was brought from India and has been painted by Raghuvar Dayal.

The Skymusic Choir and Ensemble also performed a rendition of Gandhi's favorite hymns, including 'Vaishnava Jana To', 'Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram'.

The United Nations General Assembly had adopted a resolution with a record number of 143 co-sponsors in June 2007, whereby it declared October 2, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, as "International Day of Non Violence" and invited all member states, NGOs and individuals, including the United Nations to organise events to commemorate this day.
