UNGA security scare: Suspicious package near 43rd street cleared, no threat

Part of Midtown East in New York City was shut down to traffic and pedestrians on Tuesday afternoon after a suspicious package was discovered, according to the NYPD. The item was found near East 43rd Street and Third Avenue at 2:57 p.m. and was later deemed harmless. The closure covered 42nd to 44th streets between Second Avenue and Lexington Avenue. While most of the area has since reopened, 43rd Street between Third Avenue and Lexington Avenue remained closed as police continued their investigation. The incident occurred near the United Nations, where leaders from around the world are gathering for the UN General Assembly.
