British Home Secretary Suella Braverman announced her resignation on Wednesday after taking the role just 43 days back when Liz Truss took charge at 10 Downing Street as the prime minister.

"I have made a mistake, I accept responsibility; I resign," Braverman said in letter to Truss posted on Twitter. Braverman said she had "serious concerns" about the government's commitment to honouring commitments it made to voters at the last election.

The home secretary's exit comes right after a meeting with Truss and is could be the result of disagreement over government policy.

In what is seen to be taking a dig at Truss and her administration, Braverman said ‘The business of government relies upon people accepting responsibility for their mistakes. Pretending we haven’t made mistakes, carrying on as if everyone can’t see we have made them and hoping that things will magically come right is not serious politics."

Braverman was a strong critic of Truss taking an U-turn on debt-fuelled tax cuts.

"It is obvious to everyone that we are going through a tumultous time. I have concerns about the direction of this government. Not only have we broken key pledges that were promised to our voters, but I have had serious concerns about this Government's commitment to honouring manifesto commitments, such as reducing overall migration numbers and stopping illegal migration, particuarly the dangerous small boats crossings," she wrote in the letter.

According to a report from the Guardian, former transport secretary Grant Shapps may be selected as her replacement.
