Turkish student detained for pro-Palestine stance in the US released

A Tufts University student from Turkey who was held for over six weeks in an immigration detention centre in Louisiana was released from custody on Friday (May 9). Rumeysa Ozturk was detained after co-writing an opinion piece criticising her school's response to Israel's war in Gaza. US District Judge William Sessions, during a hearing in Burlington, Vt., ordered the immediate release of Ozturk. Ozturk was arrested on March 25 by masked, plainclothes law enforcement officers on a street in the Boston suburb of Somerville, Mass., near her home.
