US President Donald Trump has nominated G. Hunter McMaster II as Assistant Treasury Secretary for Financial Markets, according to an announcement made by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday evening. McMaster has been handling the responsibilities of this role since July and will now require Senate confirmation for the formal appointment.

Before joining the Treasury Department, McMaster worked as trading chief at Key Square Group, a macro hedge fund led by Bessent. He entered the department during the early phase of Trump’s second administration as Director of Policy and Planning and currently serves as a counselor to the Treasury Secretary.

McMaster is originally from South Carolina and studied at Washington and Lee University in Virginia. His previous experience includes roles at Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs Group, as mentioned in the official announcement.

The Treasury Department also announced several other appointments on the same day. Quinn Gabriel, who was part of Trump’s 2024 campaign team, has been named White House liaison. Francis Brooke will take on the delegable duties of Deputy Secretary of the Treasury. James Bacon has been appointed as senior advisor to the Secretary, while Eric Ettorre will serve as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Trade and Investment.
